Steering rack and pinion issue/now being towed

Has anyone experienced a similar problem? We brought our 3mth old grand Cherokee L for a recall to the dealer. While there we mentioned that there is a "grinding sound" when turning the wheels sharply. They kept the vehicle since were unable to figure it out. A week later after discussions with engineers, they narrowed it down to a "steering rack and pinion "issue and backorder the part. Got the vehicle back yesterday after being assured there was no safety issue in driving it and today while pulling out of the driveway the car completely stalls and now has to be towed to the dealer. WTH!? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Did the wheels make the grinding sound while turning the wheel back and forth while the vehicle was stationary? If so that's likely the steering rack. If it made a grinding noise while turning in a circle (usually clicking sound, in rhythm with the tires rotating), say while doing a tight figure 8 pattern in a large parking lot, that's usually CV axles gone bad.

It was making a grinding/rubbing noise when I would back out of the driveway and have to turn the wheels hard. No other noise at any other time. At first thought, it was just the tires rubbing, but per dealer, says no. After 2 hour wait time today, finally tow came to get the car. Interesting- it started up to get on tow, but as soon as it got up on the tow it died...any ideas on what is causing that? Appreciate your input

No idea why it would stall, but it should record codes for the dealer to read. When having it towed, and you know something is wrong, I would also always record video of it being loaded, both for a damage log and you have a recording of events like stalling that you can show the dealer. Otherwise so many dealers seem to throw their hands up and say 'we couldn't replicate it, it didn't happen/was user error.'

Thanks for the input. We will see how this plays out.
Just an update...being told by the dealer that the EGR valve is broken?! How does this happen? Put in the order for the part, under "off-road" status, but saying it could be longer than 30 days before it comes in. Ticked off to say the least and feel completely ripped off! 3 mth old brand new vehicle, 50k, and less then 2k miles on it! This has to be a joke! No idea what recourse we have.

Lemon Laws vary by state, consult a lemon law attorney. If your vehicle is out of service and not drivable for 30 straight days, you may qualify for a buyback if that's what you want. The laws vary and there are various factors though, and it's state-specific.
