Just back from the dealer: good experience and instructions for CarPlay issue.

I dropped my GCL off at Westbury Jeep on Long Island, NY yesterday and got it back today. Linda the service manager, Nicky the shop foreman, and Leif my service advisor were very attentive to my concerns and committed to getting me back in my car ASAP. It turns out both TSBs were done by the dealership before delivery (awesome news) and they provided me with the notes for the CarPlay issue which I will post below.

In my option they missed some steps. You should also go into your WiFi settings and choose auto-join for the CarPlay network and turn OFF the auto join feature for the internal car WiFi. They both cannot be on. They both can't be connected and depending on which one joins first, CarPlay may or may not work next time you get in your vehicle!

I skipped over it all a while ago and use a USB-C. Faster response, charges at a lower temp than the wireless charger, better sound, and eliminates all the issues. Plus, lossless audio over Apple Music with WiFi.

You can do lossless over wireless CarPlay as well. What makes you think it’s better wired?

Weirdly enough once I did end up with wireless car play and use of wifi at the same time. The car wifi is so much slower than the phone normally though I ended up removing the wifi config.

I find wired CarPlay in general responds slightly quicker than wireless, and I default to wired vs wireless based on my experience with Bluetooth. I know CarPlay is WiFi, but I like having the in car WiFi running while having the wired connection. I also found wireless burns through battery like a fiend, and the constant charging pad heats the phone too much.

I'm hoping this is just an issue with my particular old iPhone, but I've also found that while running wireless carplay and Qi charging, the phone eventually heats up to the point of shutdown and then won't connect to the vehicle again until I repair as stated in the document photographed above.

I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and the first time I put it on the wireless charger it overheated as well and shutoff. This doesn’t happen at home on my wireless charger.

Interesting, same thing happened to my wife with an iPhone 12. I've had no problems with my older iPhone Xr. I wonder if 12 tells the car it can charge faster than the Xr does.

Wireless CarPlay crushes battery life; so the charging pad ends up charging the phone constantly during wire-free CarPlay, which leads to the heating issue. I went wired to eliminate that issue.

Dealer just called me on mine and they are going to pick mine up and drop off a loaner and take a look at the radio. I impressed @JeepCares with Northgate CDRJ.
I may have gotten better service once I mentioned JeepCares and knew about the TSBs and the radio STAR case. I don’t say that to bash the dealership (I may have gotten the same service not mentioning), but I feel they expedited my case; I was in and out overnight.

We're so glad to hear it! Definitely continue to keep our teams updated on their progress and we will continue monitoring your cases in the meantime.

I wanted to inform all of you that Stellantis just issued a Safety Recall Y67: 2021 WL Radio Software Update this morning! This was issued as a Safety Recall since it addresses back-up camera concerns, amongst other things. If you'd like a more immediate update, you can absolutely go to the dealership to have this software update completed. I'd be more than happy to get additional support arranged alongside your dealer visit, to ensure that you're properly taken care of and your time is valued. However, you can also wait for a FOTA (firmware-over-the-air) campaign in a few weeks. This software update aims to address the following:

  • Carplay/Android Auto Inoperable
  • Language in Italian
  • Resets
  • Bluetooth Disconnects
  • Blank Screen/Backup Camera
  • Slow to Respond/Lockup
  • Radio inoperative

If any of you would like additional support, please feel free to send us a PM! If you are currently waiting on a response from our team, I will be reaching out to you shortly. I appreciate all of your patience!

Thanks,

Courtney
