Trailer brake controller

I have a 21 L and I am wondering about a trailer brake controller. It seems weird that it can tow up to 7200 depending on package with no controller. I have not hooked a trailer up yet but will be soon. Is there a controller and if not is there an aftermarket that is available?

There is no controller installed nor an OEM mopar controller. You would need to order an aftermarket one.

The tow rating is based on having up to pneumatic brakes on the trailer for the top weights I believe.

Actually there is a factory brake controller available for the 21-22 L. OEM part #82215834AB. Found one on Ebay for 350 shipped from a dealer

I recall reading in some post somewhere that the OEM controller might be able to integrate via uconnect, but needs a software update to enable the feature. I haven't seen any pictures of this though, so if you have it installed and working I would love to see it in action.

Edit: Assuming this is a real feature anyway... it would be awesome if it is, but not a dealbreaker imho.

I had an OEM one installed by the dealer.
More details please! Which Mopar part number did they use for installation? The general consensus is that Mopar 82215834AB is what we should be getting but the mopar websites have not been updated to reflect that it is for the new GC/GCL body styles. However, if you look at the install manual pictures it is definitely the dash of the new GC/GCL.

Also, can you report on any functionality that is included via Uconnect? I have seen some state there is an update of some sort but I can't imagine what it would be for. I have the same mopar controller in my 2021 JTRD and there aren't any software updates, it's plug n play to the existing harness tucked up in the drivers footwell.

I doubt there is any software update for this. I dont recall reading anything in the owners manual about trailer pages in the dash/Uconnect screens. The Durangos that come from the factory with the brake controllers, have a screen for the trailer/towing and this can be enabled if a brake controller is added to a truck that originally came without one. But, that brake controller wires into the factory Can Bus Lines....... not the 4 wire connector like the GCL brake controller

That’s what I’m saying. Same controller is on the gladiator and it’s plug n play, no software updates required (assuming you have trailer tow package and wiring harness from the factory, which some do NOT).

Looks like the harness is behind the dash on left side when you open the drivers door, and there are A LOT of steps involve with getting it done. Lots to take off, but I will be doing this as I need the option to tow with my GCL.

I made a thread about the installing a brake trailer contoller in my Limited......It has the towing package...Connector is behind the drivers side kickpanel....No software update was needed....

Link? how bad was it getting all the trim out of center console and dash? I did it on my gladiator but that's way less than this job.

I didnt do a whole write up. I ended up taking alot more of the console and dash apart than was necessary. But everything basically is held in with push clips, so it comes apart easily. In reality, the drivers side console side panel and the drivers side lower dash panel need to come off, just to make it easier to run the wiring. BTW, I installed a Redarc controller that is very similar to the Mopar one, just a smaller knob. I was able to keep my power outlet.

Good to know, I may do the Redarc as well since it keeps the 12v plug and there's obviously room for it. I know several have said that the Redarc and Mopar are almost identical. There have even been conservations around the fact that they might actually be the same controller, just rebranded.

Which Redarc kit did you go with? I saw there were two listed and one has an additional wiring harness/plug that I can't figure out whether I need or not.
