Towing and roof accessories

Hello,

I have a 2021 JGCL Limited. Just looking to see what everybody has for towing and roof rack bars. I’ve tried ordering a hitch and wiring from mopar but no one seems to know when it will be available.

I’ve also looked at Thule and Yakima for cross bars but Thule doesn’t have anything. And Yakima is out of stock of everything.

I'm waiting for the Thule bars to be available. I like the low profile and how they don't extend past the base

I didn't like the excessively tall height of the OEM (Thule) bars, and the aftermarket Thule and Yakima systems are similarly high, so I've ordered a set of the low rise Rhino Rack towers and aero bars with the current Compass fitment bases (they're the same) which sit maybe half as high (I'll measure and post when I get them).

The photo below shows the Rhino Rack low rise towers, but fitted with their 'platform' vs the bars, but the bars will just sit at the same height on those towers in the photo (on a Compass in the pic).

I have a mopar oem hitch I can sell. Let me know if you are interested.

From what I've heard, the wiring harness is only 'easy' if the car is pre-wired for trailer package. If not, you have to buy and run the OE wire harness all the way to the front of the car. It could go either way depending on how it left the factory (trailer prep or not). Luckily mine came with the full trailer setup (including the hitch).

Yes the wiring harness can be a pain. I ran mine to the battery just under the drivers seat. It was easier than running it to the terminal under the hood. Didn't have to take out too many trim pieces on the drivers side and with the help of a fish tape, was able to run the wire to the battery terminal under the drivers seat. One full days worth of work for the hitch and the wiring harness but it was worth it given the dealer would have charged around $1,600 for it. The funny thing is I already paid $700 for the trailer "prep" package when I bought the jeep.

They're an Australian company. I've not owned any of their gear before (always Yakima and Thule in my past), but they're also a little less expensive. I'm not sure if they're quite as advanced (the Yakima cross bars look like they're quieter due to the wing shape) but I need the extra clearance and don't like reaching so high (a couple inches could help) as the other options. Looks like it will be another week before they arrive due to etrailer not having part of the kit in stock.

If you watch the hitch install on etrailer you will want to kill yourself for not getting one with factory hitch. You have to remove rear fascia and lower the exhaust to install the hitch

I had to look around in my area to find a vehicle with the towing package, only to find out that it didn't come with a hitch?! And none of the GCL in my area had a hitch pre-installed. After having watched the e-trailer video on how to do it I don't for the life of me understand why Jeep wouldn't have installed that in the factory and just charged the extra. The dealer wanted 2K to install it!! Uhaul says they'll do it for $700. Ugh.

Early builds had the hitch and wiring installed at the factory. The because of the chip shortage the wiring wasn’t available so the trailer tow package was changed to a prep package without the hitch. Total crap. Mine has the prep package. Not happy how they handled this. The package went from $995 to $695. There is no way we can have the hitch and wiring installed for $300!!

I agree it's total BS. A lot of automakers are doing similar things. Imagine picking up your custom ordered Mercedes and finding out it doesn't have heated seats, but hey, $200 credit! It's not OK, but it's not just Jeep.

Yeah. I wish it would have came with one. When I bought it from the dealer the sales guy told me the hitches would be in soon and they would install it for the extra $300 because it came with the $695 tow prep package. When I called a few weeks later to find out if the hitches were in yet they said they didn’t know what I was talking about and that wasn’t going to happen. They then told me that the tow prep package had nothing to do with the hitch and wiring but rather upgraded shocks and rear end parts to for better towing. They quoted me $1200 for parts and labor and told me that they didn’t even know when they could get the hitch and wiring. I opened a case with Jeep and received a call from Jeep and they said there was nothing they could do.

Following! I'd like to know more options about the towing. The factory hitch is expensive.
I also heard the jeep compass cross bars also work for GCL, but I prfer a customized crossbar. If you want to buy an affordable and low profile roof bars, I recommend the Snailfly crossbar on Amazon. Hope it helps.
