The manual talks about two “themes” for the main display: Digital and Analog, which you switch between with the ”OK” button. In either, the speed is displayed in large digits in the middle. With Digital, it’s accompanied by a thermometer-like bar along the bottom, and with Analog, it’s accompanied by a more traditional-looking round speedometer on one side and a similar tachometer on the other.

It also mentions a Theme setting: ‘This setting will allow you to adjust the brightness of your theme. Setting options are “Light”, “Dark” and “Auto”. Select to show themes in Light or Dark mode. “Auto” changes the theme with the headlights.’

If somebody’s talking about 14-17 themes, they may be referring to these items that can be brought up in the main display, which the manual refers to as “submenus”:

Main Menu
• Speedometer
• Night Vision
• Driver Assist
Vehicle Info
• Fuel Economy
• Gauge Summary
• Oil Life
• Tire Pressure
• Stop/Start
Trip Info
• Trip A
• Trip B
Navigation
• Map Display
Off Road
• Terrain Status
• Vehicle Dynamics
• Pitch & Roll
Audio
• Audio Information
Stored Messages
• Messages
Settings
• Screen Setup
• Head Up Display

Not everybody has Night Vision, Driver Assist, Stop/Start, Navigation, Terrain Status, or HUD, so it’s 12 to 18 items.

The themes the original poster is referring to is for the main screen (middle of the dash) not the gauge cluster.

I think you’re right—which goes back to the “Light/Dark/Auto” quote I posted from the manual, which is what he should see… but I also think that whoever was talking about having lots of “themes“ was really talking about the gauge cluster submenu pages using the wrong terminology.

[The manual] also mentions a Theme setting: ‘This setting will allow you to adjust the brightness of your theme. Setting options are “Light”, “Dark” and “Auto”. Select to show themes in Light or Dark mode. “Auto” changes the theme with the headlights.’
I should add that this doesn’t explain why your options have different names, or why you only have two and not three, but it probably explains why changing it might not make a difference: with headlights on, one pairing looks the same, and with headlights off, a different pairing looks the same.

I’d check to see if there’s an update available for your UConnect system.
