Summit Reserve Blackout Information

Hi all,

Has anyone got a hold of the part number for the new high altitude black summit badge for the back?

Also, I'm interested in blacking out the door and tailgate silver painted trim. Is there any consensus yet on vinyl wrapping or removing and painting as being the best option? Is the vinyl wrapping really hard to do a good job on? Does anyone know how much of a pain it is to remove this trim?

Thank you

Vinyl wrap is cheaper, but less durable. That said, if installed properly and a good film is used, from what I've read it should last 5 years. It also leaves the option for the next owner to easily remove it if they don't like it (ie no effect on resale, you never know who likes what). Make sure you use a good professional installer who warrantees their work, though. I had clear PPF put on mine. I did some of it myself, and some of it 'pro' installed, and there are problems with peeling after one winter on the parts I did as well as the parts they did.

The other option is changing the actual trim parts with OEM black ones, and that's a pretty big job with a lot of disassembly from what I've seen on the WK2.

I'm planning on doing this on my 4xe Summit Reserve once I get it. I wasn't able to add the High Altitude package to my order. My plan is to go into a local paint shop and see how much they are going to charge for it and then whatever they don't want to do or whatever costs more than the High Altitude package part I'll just order as a part from my dealer.

Be wary, though. The OEM black trim is generally powder coated as it is much more durable than regular paint. You could have all of your existing trim powder coated, too. If you're having it painted, all the trim should be removed for paint, but from what I've always seen and been told, Powdercoating is a much more durable option. Vinyl wrap is generally a fraction of the cost, and if done by a good installer, should last several years. Things to consider...
