Remove 2nd row headrest

Hi,

Upgrading our infant car seat to a toddler convertible car seat. Picked the one we want and found out when trying to install it the headrest is in the way. No problems right? Just pop it out ...

According to owners manual that is not possible... Although in the front row headrest section it mentions a dealer can do it.

Going to make a call tomorrow but wanted to know how others are handling this.

Yeah I found that the hard way too. I was trying to install seat back kick covers and realized I couldn’t get the top part properly installed cuz the headrests won’t come up!

So I had to cut the top opening area of the cover, wrap it back around the metal poles, and then hold the cover opening with a safety pin

Whatever you do, DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE THESE. The second row headrests have some sort of cable connected to the seat release that makes the headrests fold down automatically. Because of this, the headrests simply cannot be removed.
I say this from experience... I used the same method as you would for the front headrest removal (a stiff paperclip pushed into the small holes on the side of the plastic clips where the metal legs drop into the seat back). I was able to shimmy the headrest up about 1/2" before giving it a stiff tug. NOW, the headrest will never stay in the upright position and I have to use a cloth-wrapped bungee cord to keep it upright. I was planning on taking off the fabric on the seat back to try and reattach the cable, but the entire back is metal and inaccessible. I fear this may have been a costly mistake on my part... (I was trying to take it off to go into a fabric store to match the leather to fabric to make seat covers for the dogs)

If anyone has any recommendations of fixing this (without paying a dealer for hours of labor to do it), I'm all ears!

Why are people so concerned with the head rest? We have 2 car different car seats in ours and it never even crossed my mind that it mattered. You have the slider and recliner adjustments is that not enough to get things fitted correctly? Why is the head rest a problem?

Speaking only for myself here... Most custom-fitted seat covers require the removal of the headrest. Once the cover is on, you can slide the headrest back through the slots. You can certainly just grab a scissors and cut the opening wider, but fitted covers are $$$... I assume no one is removing the headrest just because... (Not having children and needing car seats, I'm not sure about that specific issue) The seat adjustment is pretty impressive, though!
