Passenger Screen Display on 2022 GC 2-Row

For the life of me, I do not see what value the passenger screen adds to the vehicle. It does not come with the Fire TV app even though it is advertised as such. I have tried hooking a computer up and a phone with cable and still cannot get video to play. I have the wifi so I can hear the sound from a movie from Netflex playing , but no video. I have tried calling u-connect and no one seems to know how to play video. Is the only way to play video on a USB, which requires a media file? If I can't play video, just not sure what the benefits are of this screen. Can someone help as I am losing my mind trying to understand this. I can't believe they would market it this is they don't provide any instruction anywhere. Please help!

Are you using the HDMI connection?

I only tried that with the Amazon fire stick. I got the "Fire Stick" image to show up on the screen but couldn't go anywhere from there. Is that the secret to find an HDMI cord that goes into the phone or computer? I just figure the USB would do the same as an HDMI cord. I appreciate your comment. Thank you!

HDMI carries video and sound.

Whenever I‘ve seen anything mentioning FireTV on the passenger screen, it has been reasonably clear that works only in conjunction with the Rear Entertainment option (which, last I heard, is still not available to order).

Were you using the remote? A stick like that isn't intended to be plugged into a display that has touch input, so if you were trying to use the touchscreen to control it, that won't work. Just use the remote that came with it, and it should work.

So I went to Best Buy, bought an new fire stick as the one I had was like 5 years old. It started downloading and stopped at like 95% complete. The guy at best buy was like "this should work in theory", but it wouldn't complete the download. I think this is a big deal that you can't get video on this thing. It's a $1095 option, not sure it's worth it if your passenger can't watch anything or do anything with it. There has to be something it can do with video. If some how I figure it out, I am going to do a you tube account and make a million dollars as I am just an average joe so I know everyone buying a SR is thinking the same thing I was. Even the dealer wasn't aware that you couldn't play videos on the passenger screen. Love this car though....

I was looking at the videos of walk arounds and the app is clearly on the passenger screen. There are no hook ups in the back for screens so again, not sure why they would put a screen up front with no video capability. Also if you go on the company website and look under news, there is an article that clearly states that you should be able to access fire tv. Call a dealer and ask him and I bet my paycheck he says you will be able to access fire tv on the front passenger screen. If I am the only one that misinterpreted this, then I will certainly tuck my tail between my legs and not say another word. Just will be disappointed, but still love the car.

The front screen does have video capability. My wife has a Grand Wagoneer, my daughter plugs her iPhone into the hdmi port using apples HDMI to lightning connector and watches whatever she wants to play from her phone.

I’m not sure what page you mean, but if you go to the page that covers technology for the new GC, the first thing you see is about the passenger screen:

For the first time ever in a Grand Cherokee, front seat passengers can enjoy a screen devoted just to them. The new available Passenger Screen makes it easy for passengers to navigate the journey and send directions (Disclosure2) to the driver’s display. You can play movies, stream online content with Amazon Fire TV (Disclosure3), listen to music or podcasts and tune in to everything with wireless headphones.

…and if you click on Disclosure 3 for details on FireTV, you see this:

3. Vehicle must be in an active and usable cellular range and properly equipped with a Uconnect® 5 or Uconnect 5 NAV system and Rear Seat Entertainment package. Requires a WiFi data plan and linked Amazon account to run Amazon Fire TV in the vehicle. Streaming service subscriptions are not included. Amazon, Fire, and all related marks are trademarks of Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates.

I can’t speak to what your dealer may be telling you. Some of them are certainly not as well versed as others.

The Owner’s Manual also clearly states that FireTV is only available if you have the Rear Seat Entertainment option. Otherwise, the manual indicates that you have two choices for video playback on the passenger screen: you can play video files saved to a USB device, or you can use the HDMI input. From the manual:

HDMI PROJECTING

HDMI lets you connect a device to the provided HDMI port, using an HDMI cable, and project the device directly to the Passenger Screen. To begin, plug a device into the HDMI port. Then, press the HDMI button on the touchscreen.

HDMI will continue to show the menu bar and Headphone Pairing button.

Note:
  • The HDMI Card will not automatically launch when a new device is connected. The HDMI Card will show a device connected, and the Card will need to be pressed.
  • If the user disconnects a device from the HDMI port while the HDMI Card is in full screen, the system will close HDMI and reload the Home screen.

I bet if you look at the back of the front seats in those videos, you’ll see entertainment screens, meaning those cars are equipped with the Rear Seat Entertainment package.

Pretty dishonest to advertise Fire TV in the passenger screen with a footnote indicating that is only available if the vehicle is equipped with rear entertainment, which is not a feature that is available to ANYBODY. Since NOBODY can order a JGC that includes Fire TV, it shouldn't be mentioned anywhere until such time as rear entertainment is available.

Reading this thread, it seems there is some kind of misunderstanding.

If you don't have the Rear Entertainment System (which, of course, nobody has so far), the limitation of not being able to use or access Fire TV is limited to the fact that you can't use it WITHOUT ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT - or in other words, it's not installed on the vehicle.

That, however, does NOT even remotely mean you can't GET Fire TV on the front passenger screen.
Above the wireless charger, you have an HDMI-port and a USB-port. The vehicle is equipped with a hotspot, too. So all you need is a Fire stick and you should be able to watch Fire TV.

I saw on a previous post that a member got stuck at 95% of updating the stick. How about doing those updates in your home over Wi-Fi first and once the stick is running, put it in the vehicle?

BTW, I did the exact thing on my previous BMW X7: Fire-stick, HDMI-port, USB-port and vehicle hotspot. Worked like a charm. And NO, the BMW NEVER had "Fire TV" as a feature, either. And yet, I could still watch it:

BMW Fire TV integration

That is correct! The firestick into the HDMI port, power to stick is from the USB port then start with the included remote. However, you must have internet access via Jeep hotspot or cellphone hotspot.

I have tried to connect my Roku to the Wi-Fi in the Grand Wagoneer. It never sees it. I am still on the trial and Wi-Fi period thou. Every time I connect my phone to the Wi-Fi I have to sign-in or click use as is to connect. I can use my phone as a hotspot and the Roku works great.

Kinda odd! Jeep WiFi and Hotspot WiFi should be the same. Very strange.

Believe it or not but there were reports on the BMW-forum where members also struggled with their Rokus. They tried the Fire-Stick and it worked - LOL!

I have Rokus in my home and that feed back was the only reason I bought a Fire-Stick for the BMW in the first place.

Thank you. I will try getting the fire tv to work first in the house then put it in the car.
