No Change in MPG

I currently have a 2018 GC Overland.. When I compare the specs between between my 2018 and same options to a 2022 I notice the following. The same engine with the 2022 has slightly less HP and Torque. Slightly smaller gas tank. One less quart of oil and several hundred pounds lighter and slightly less payload. Same mpg ratings of 18/25/21. I would have thought after 4 years with less weight supposedly more aerodynamic, and other efficiencies one would see an improvement in mileage.

I'm getting 13 city, 15 average in my 4x4 V8 GC L. That's only slightly better than a 700hp Ram TRX . I'd rather have double the horsepower, at this point.

Those numbers are great for a Hemi... which is why my next JGC will be 4xe (or possibly the upcoming inline 6).

I just did a trip that was just under 850 miles and averaged 19 mpg with my V6 Overland L. I drive within 5 mph if the speed limit

I averaged 11 MPG in my 22 GC SR V8. It was so bad that I sold it back to the dealer today.

That sounds about right for city driving. Went from Hemi to diesel and loved it. With diesel gone, I'm going to give 4xe a try (or inline 6 if that comes out before 4xe is available).

For my part, I live at high elevation and tow boats, snowmobiles, and other things, sometimes over 10k' foot mountain passes. Even at valley elevation I've got a 20% power loss vs sea level, so the V6 simply can't hack it.

What I really need is the new twin turbo inline six, but that may be another year before it's introduced on the GC, and given all my other problems, I'll probably wait a couple years so they can sort it out and make it reliable.

What about the 4xe? (Or do you need that third row of seats?)

I need three rows of seats and I doubt that tows 7200 lbs?
The GC 4xe (all trim levels) are indeed rated at 7200 lbs towing, with their 375 hp and 470 lb/ft torque bettering the V8‘s 357 hp and 390 torque.

And the 4xe fuel efficiency (all trim levels) is estimated at 56 mpg combined, compared to the V8 SR 2-row at 19 city, 26 hwy or the V8 SR 3-row at 18 city, 25 hwy.

I‘m sure they’ll add a 3-row 4xe someday…

Ideally I'd like the new I6 twin turbo hybrid, slated to be announced (probably just in the Wagoneer) at NYAS in April. The I6 is an ideal engine configuration for NVH, the turbos allow much more power at high elevation, and the hybrid would boost economy further.

That's good news about the 4xe towing capacity, though. I'm a little surprised. Unfortunately it's not available in the L, and the 2 row is just too small for my use case.

According to Jeep website the 4xe has a 6000 lbs towing capacity.

Hmm. I do see where the main 4xe page says that. But if you go to the 4xe build tool and click “Display Model Comparison,” all 4xe models are listed there with 7200 lb towing capacity.

Edit: Hmm again. After you display the model comparison, if you click “Standard Features,” the “Dimensions and Capacities” section gives you a third answer: 6200 lbs.

Edit again: And https://www.jeep.com/new-grand-cherokee/grand-cherokee-4xe/specs.html gives you a fourth answer: 3500 lbs for the Limited, and 6000 lbs for the higher trims.

(I‘d check to see what the owner’s manual says, but the Mopar site still only gives you the non-4xe manual.)

Sounds pretty good for a V8. I average 15 in my 2022 4x4 V6 GC L Summit. I was averaging close to 20 in my 2019 GC Trailhawk. Obviously the L is larger, but with the same engine I had not expected this much of a hit.

The owner‘s manual is still not out, but all the First Drive reviewers are using the 6000 lb towing figure for 4xe.
