Interesting first highway drive, transmission pulse

Posting for anyone else that might experience this issue.

My wife and I had already test drove an Overland a few weeks ago but ended up purchasing at a different dealership that had one with all the options we wanted.

Had 15mi on it total, took it for a quick spin around the block, but didn't get on the highway since we'd already done that (oops).

Got all the paperwork signed, pulled out for a long trip home, and at about 50mph the car began to pulse or lurch every 3-5 seconds. It would happen when maintaining speed, not accelerating but with the foot on the gas (ie it happened with cruise on very consistently).

Turned around, pulled into service, everyone's faces said "no idea" since it's too new and they hadn't worked on a single one yet. Found two software updates for the transmission already but the descriptions for them didn't match. The sales guy got the head mechanic to join me for a test drive, and as soon as it started happening again, he goes "Oh, I didn't expect it to be that noticeable." He gets quiet, clearly trying to think through what might be happening. This goes on for a few minutes, we'd just gotten a little over 30mi I believe, and then all of a sudden it just stops and feels fine. Several more test drives, software updates, etc, never happens again. Trip home is uneventful and comfy as hell :)

Anyway, their best guess was the transmission is constantly calculating how you drive to optimize shifts over time, and with so few miles, it just wasn't sure what to do.

Fingers crossed that's all it was.

Cheers,

Ryan

I had the same issue. I had test drove a different one than I bought. On my 30 mile drive home it was surging. I was not sure if it was fuel or trans. I shifted into sport mode and it was good. by the time I got home it was gone and has not happened again. I only have about 250 miles on it now.

Most of the newer transmission do learn how you drive and adjust accordingly. There are ways to reset the "adaptives" if you ever wanted to.....

I’m 2800 miles in and still experiencing suv shuttering/jerking issue that I started noticing a around 150 miles when starting from stop and when the gear changes from D1 to D2.
It can’t be a transmission learning issue at this point right?
