Fuel range question on new GCL

I just picked up my 21 GCL today and it shows a fuel range of 275 miles with a full tank. Shouldn’t I be seeing something closer to 400? Is this normal for a new vehicle? FYI, I have the 5.7L.

It is a brand new vehicle, which means it probably was only driven in the parking lot. After you start driving on the road and highway for a while you should see the range estimator becoming more accurate. When I got my Grand Cherokee L, my range actually started going up while I was driving, it started off at the low 300s (mines a v6) and after driving about 150 miles the range is at 270 miles, indicating a full tank with my driving is around 420 miles. You will see considerably less due to the 5.7L V8, but that is a cost of having a v8 and I would say it is well worth it. Congrats on the car!

Thanks for the response. I'll have to keep an eye on it and let the dealer know if things don't change.

I agree with rp123. If I, for example, drive my GCL on the highway, I'll average 22/23 mpg (I set the cruise control at 78 mph). With 22/23 mpg you'll average over 400 miles on a tank of gas (the tank holds over 20 gallons - I think it's a 23 gallon tank?). The next fill up, the range will shoot out a number over 400 miles. If I drive strictly city, my mpg's are around 16/17 mpg. If I burn the tank with all city driving, my range kicks out something approximately 350 miles. Basically, the mpg you averaged on your last tank of gas is reflected after a fill-up for your new tank of gas.

My 4x4 5.7 is only getting 13mpg in mixed driving. I saw about 15mpg in highway (80-90mph) use over 1500 miles on my delivery drive (from AR to WY, mostly interstate).

Car and Driver is seeing 11mpg in their RAM TRX (Hellcat engine), so I feel like I should be getting better than I am (what with half the power in a smaller motor).

Mine had 275 miles to empty when I left the dealership and it had 10 miles on it. When I got home 30 miles from the dealer it said 260 miles to empty. The more you drive it the longe you will get once you get miles on it. I took it to Chicago three weeks after I got it and I'm getting 21 mpg and around 450 miles on a full tank.

I 100% agree with you Sarge!! I came off of a '17 Infiniti QX80 that averaged 17-18Hwy and I got the '21 V6 GCL hoping to see 23-25Hwy. At 65-70mph, I'm seeing 20-21mpg. I'm not happy with the gas mileage at all. Also, while towing a 4400 lb trailer, I get 8-9mpg, which is the same as the QX80. The problem is, I have to manually switch between 5th & 6th gear to keep it from over/under revving, or I'm sure the MPG would be worse. BTW... This is with the V6!

Maybe it is the 7.5 gallons of gas that the dealer “threw in” to the deal. Lol

Today, I stopped to fill up with the marker just a tick above the 1/2 tank mark. It took 13.5 gallons before the pump auto-stopped, and I topped it off at 17.1 gallons total.

So, the sensor is DEFINITELY not calibrated correctly. If I have a 23 gallon tank, and the gauge says just a bit over half, it should take about 11 gallons, not 13.5, and definitely not 17.1. Worth adding that this was partial 'ethanol' gas (like 10%), which has a tendancy to cause bubbles when filling and trigger the autoshutoff prematurely.
