Class IV Receiver-Hitch

Does anyone know if the Summit or Overland trims have a Class IV hitch as standard equipment? It's not a deal breaker since most class III receivers are rated up to 8000 LBS... but it's really confusing how a lower level trim would have a towing option which isn't available on a upper level trim. The comparison tool between Summit, Overland, and Limited shows between the trims, the only one which has a class IV receiver is the Limited.

So here is the low down on this... But first some clarification. Generally, Tow Package is an option on the Limited and Standard on the Overland and Summit trims. The Summit and Overland trims use a different suspension system than the Limited. The limited has standard suspension whereas the Overland and Summit have an Active Dampening Air Suspension system. As part of that fancy suspension there is an auto leveling function on the rear to raise up the vehicle when a heavy load is hooked up. That fancy system has a chip that is affected by the shortage. Jeep announced awhile back they were removing that feature and doing a $750 credit to vehicles that had it. Because they don't have that available it removed the ability to do the tow package at all. So the only Summit and Overlands you will find with the tow package are ones that were already built and have been sitting on the lots since before Jeep made the call to remove it. Limiteds can still be built with the Tow package though since there is no fancy suspension system tied to it.

Here's where things get weird and I cannot understand. If you are looking at the Summit and Overland trims pre-chip shortage, you will see some have a $695 package price and some have a $995 package. I have no idea what the price difference entails because the package is the same, nor do I know why it's there since it's standard. Also, there were a string of vehicles already in build when they decided to pull the plug on the chips. So you will see some window stickers that say $750 credit, meaning they didn't have the chips and since the build/VIN were already issued they couldn't very well sell the vehicle as is. What I don't know is if those still have the tow package but just don't have the auto leveling functionality the chip also provides. Any pictures I see the hitch is always hidden behind the bumper cover.

The newer Summit and Overland vehicles just built, or being built, will have no mention of the 750 credit because they are already price/package adjusted before the order/VIN was created. I don't believe there is any sort of tow package at all on those.

Side note as someone mention 8k tow rating earlier. The highest tow rating the Grand Cherokee L has is 7,200lb and that is if you outfit it with the V8 HEMI motor. Otherwise, they are all 6,200lb tow ratings.

The difference between the Tow package and the Tow Prep package. Seems the tow wiring harness for the WL is on backorder until the end of the year. So the news ones have the Tow prep package which has everything except the rear hitch and the hitch wiring harness. You have everything else including the max tow rating for the engine. But, you will spend $1500 installing both when the wiring harness becomes available.

Oof... no tow package at all is a complete deal breaker for me. Let's hope they don't do that to us.

They already did do that to us lol. I found out that for some dumb reason if you settle for a 4x2 on the overland you can still get the towing package. But if you get the 4x4 overland or the summit (only comes in 4x4) you’re shit out of luck for towing!

There is no max tow rating. All the of trucks have the same 6200lb rating, unless you jump up to the hemi. But that sounds right in terms of not having the hitch or wiring down… seems to me that $300 difference is going to cover the cost to get the wiring and hitch installed though!

The hitch is $500 installed and the wiring harness is $700 before taxes. I checked when I bought my limited that has the "tow prep" group. The killer on the wiring harness is the labor. There is a lot involved in it.
