Air Suspension Failure After Towing

Has anyone had this suspension error come up?

The suspension won't level itself, and even after multiple restarts and being parked overnight the front is on the low setting and the rear is on level 3. The dash light won't go off, and even starting it and driving it doesn't result in it resetting itself. I towed a snowmobile trailer yesterday and on the way to the trail everything was fine (level). On the way home, the rear was way too low, and the front was fine, but after unhooking the trailer, it went the opposite direction (front down, rear up).

It just seems to be another electrical issue. It's done this a few other times when parked (not towing - this was my first time towing anything with it).

Has anyone else had this happen?

Monday. I'm working on doing a trade-assist buyback with Jeep and my dealer. I'm hoping I'm dropping it off for good this time. So sick of this thing.

You really just can't win. I pretty much lurk around here, but I have to say you've definitely been through the wringer. You're making me reconsider my order. 😅

It would seem like some cars aren’t as bad as mine, but then I was speaking with a client last week who is having all kinds of problems with her ‘21 WK2 Uconnect and rear hatch much like I am. Different platform, same/similar electronics. My ‘21 Chrysler minivan rental car in FL had all kinds of problems with CarPlay too.

Makes me think it’s systemic software, modules, or wiring harnesses that aren’t made right.

I absolutely cannot recommend anyone buy anything from Stellantis at this point, sadly. It’s a great vehicle in theory, but I’m having more problems in the first four months than my other two 2006/2008 cars had over 160k miles each, and one of them is a BMW!

I’m trying to negotiate a replacement vs a full on buyback but I’m questioning that decision at this point.

The air suspension failed on my 2019 GC Trailhawk after only 37,000 miles - just out of warranty. $2500 for a new air compressor. And yet I still leased a 2022 GC L  They just have so many tempting features not available on other cars in this price range (probably why there are so many things to break). Hoping to keep this one within warranty for the full duration of the lease.

Just read your full list of issues that you posted on Feb 28 - wow that's intense. Not sure what state you are in, but in CA this would most certainly fall under our Lemon Law. Lawyers take Lemon Law cases free of charge to the plaintiff because they are guaranteed payment from the defendant at time of award. You would be reimbursed for any and all payments you have made on the car.

Yeah I've lemon lawed two cars in CA a couple decades ago, I'm familiar with how to succeed with that if I need to. Wyoming is basically the same law but it only applies to new purchases. Jeep is working on a dealer-assist trade-in to order a new 2022. I bought an 8/125 bumper to bumper Mopar warranty for this one, but hopefully I'll be turning it in soon. It's just ridiculous how many things are wrong on mine. I think there's a problem in the harness or bus system that's causing most of the electrical problems.

Here's a better photo of how it looks now.IMG_3586.jpg

The dash screen says "selected ride height no permitted due to payload". There is no trailer attached and the vehicle is empty.

It rides terrible too; the front is 'bouncy' as it appears to be riding on the bumpstops, and the rear is the same, but it's raised to at least level 3.

Attached is my entire list of problems. I can't recommend buying one of these at this point, obviously.

At this point I'd rather have my money back, but against my better judgment I'll give them one more chance. I've been a Jeep fan for four decades, and this is my fifth, but this is teetering on 'never again', except maybe a Wrangler.

The order I have in would be my thirteenth Jeep, so I definitely understand where you're coming from. The past two have been leases because I don't trust all of the technology in the newer ones to be worth my time after the warranty period is up. I am planning on leasing the one on order as well. Luckily I haven't had any issues with any of the Jeeps that I didn't cause myself.

🤞 for you with your replacement!

Thanks. I bought the Mooar bumper to bumper 8/125k warranty on mine, expecting some trouble down the line, but this is just ridiculous.

The whole reason I threw down $80k on this (with tax, reg, accessories) was to have an awesome family rig that everyone would love, and I wouldn’t have to waste time on repairs.

My 2008 BMW 535xi wagon and 2006 Xterra have had fewer problems over the last ten+ years than this has had in four months.

Sarge, check your air suspension links. Perhaps 1 popped off the ball or broke somehow. If 1 of the front links is detached/broken/etc, the entire front will drop to the floor.

Thanks. I’ll mention it to the dealer on Monday. It’s really weird how it was riding low on the way back with the trailer on, and then after unhitching it went the opposite way (front down back up). I’ll update this with the solution.

The dealer said they had to reset the computer and clear a code for 'payload over capacity'. No problems now.

I think what happened is when returning from snowmobiling, I first started the car, then loaded two sleds on the front of the trailer (ie all tongue weight) and then it took another 15 minutes or more before the other sleds arrived and were loaded.

If the car had not been started until after ALL the sleds were loaded, the tongue weight would have been much less (trailer load balanced) and there would have been no problem (there was no problem going to the trailhead).

I asked the dealer if there is any way to clear that code 'in the field' and was told the only way to reset it is via the dealer computer. I would hope that pulling fuses or disconnecting the battery for a few minutes might also do the trick, but they were unaware of any such option, which is another strike against the reliability of 'life with an air suspension' I suppose.

If anyone knows of any tricks that would clear that code remotely (ie on WK2, RAM, or other FCA products), please advise.
