Aftermarket Speakers

Has anyone installed aftermarket speakers? I’m thinking of upgrading my six speaker setup. To my ear the base speakers aren’t very impressive and sound muddled or “flat.” The local car audio shop recommended 2 sets of 6x9 Kenwood Excelon door speakers and said I could consider adding an amp and or sub in the future. I’ve also checked Crutchfield but they haven’t researched the WL yet. Curious if anyone has had any experiences with replacing the base door speakers and how much of a difference it makes, or has any other advice.

Audio shop also said Jeep hasn’t yet released an adapter that could be used for aftermarket speakers, so he would have to splice the current wiring. Anyone have any guesses when Jeep will release an adapter? I’d prefer to wait for the adapter before doing the installation.

Thanks everyone.

FYI
For the 6x9 the Metra speaker harness is 72-6514 & the dash and rear top have 3&half in speaker use Metra 72-7902. When I install the dash and rear top speakers my car ANC works fine but when I install the 6x9 the ANC starts making my GCL sounds very loud and driving funny so I took the 6x9 out and kept the 3in speakers in. Good luck

Be careful. Generally a lot can be gained from upgrading the amp, especially if you upgrade speakers. And then you want to match the amp output with the speaker power rating.

The other issue is the nature of the signal to the amp from the head unit. I recall reading earlier that it may not yet be possible to upgrade the amp due to the type of signal coming from the head unit without a third party converter, which wasn't yet available for the new GC. If you put better speakers that are more power hungry than the rating on the amp, it will not sound 'better', because you'll be overdriving the amp. Also, the amp is presumably mapped/tuned to the characteristics of the stock speakers and the cabin environment (they do a lot of testing and tweaking to get the best sound for the lowest price, essentially).

This needs a bump. Has anyone replaced their speakers in their Grand Cherokee/L? I'm becoming more and more tempted to do this myself. I see crutchfield specifies speakers for locations, but I'm concerned about crossover points already in place. I've got the midgrade sound system, but I'd kill for some improvement.

I was considering this for my six speaker JGC. The idea was abandoned due to cost. I just traded for a GCL with the Alpine system. I think it sounds pretty good with proper equalizer setting and surround sound on.

The McIntosh system is not the loudest, but the audio fidelity is about the best I've ever heard from an OEM. First class, not harsh, easy to listen to at higher volumes for long periods. It's cheap for what it delivers, but unfortunate you have to pay for a higher trim level to get it. Worth every penny, and maybe the best bang for your buck if you value sound toward the audiophile end of things. It really is a joy to listen to.

I emailed Mcintosh back in March. I asked if I could purchase the upgrades from them( currently have the Alpine system). They said that they just designed it. They stated that this would have to be bought through FCA. I have yet to find OE parts available to build the upgrade myself.

I can’t find any also. I was looking to upgrade and add the sun as well but not sure what modules/wiring I would need.
