Aftermarket Mopar Hitch Installation

First of all, thanks so much to all the contributors here who help so many of us lurkers make decisions about what to do with their GCLs!

I needed a trailer hitch mainly for a bike rack and a hitch mounted cargo carrier and occasionally towing a Butterfly sailboat. I really wanted (and could only afford) an Altitude after my previous car was totaled, so I needed to move quickly and had to buy something off of one of metro Detroit’s many lots.

Unable to find one with the tow package, I knew I’d have to go aftermarket. I purchased the OEM hitch from Detroit Mopar for $343 of the door with local pickup and wanted to install it myself, receiving excellent guidance from TorrWL. However, after consulting with my wife, who doesn’t have a ton of faith in my DIY skills, “WE” decided it would be best to have it done by a professional.

I contacted all of the local hitch places, none of whom would install it since they don’t sell it, and consulted a number of body shops. I eventually was able to get a quote from a truck accessory place for $240 and a local trustworthy body shop for $228-275.

I ended up using the body shop because it’s a short bike ride from work. They got it done for $257, with some mechanical labor due to having to drop the exhaust to access the rear bolts.

All together, it was $600 with no wiring. I was quoted $1050 by the dealership I purchased the vehicle from, so I feel okay about how it turned out. I figure I can add the wiring once a non-OEM harness hits the market since I won’t actually tow until next summer.

Just thought I’d share my experience for anyone considering doing the same.

After watching a video on e-trailer of the hitch installation I totally regret not getting a limited with the tow group. The installation seems extremely complicated.

I thought U-Haul already came out with one that fits the GCL with wiring for around $600 including labor? I'd go with them based on lifetime warranty.

Very hard to come by from
What I’ve seen. I’m looking for an Overland with tow package and I feel like I’m hunting for a Sasquatch. I hear about them but never actually see one. I am in a situation where I can’t wait around to order one either. I have a trade to get rid of and who knows how much longer trade values will be high. Could be a year but who knows. Also a 2022 the price is definitely going to be more than the 2021 prices. I’m also trying to decide which is better to have, the air suspension or the Advanced Protech group III. I don’t see Overlands with both, so I have to pick. I will never go off road with it. I would like a tow pkg for my bike rack and I have a boat I never tow but it would be nice to have a receiver incase I ever do need to tow the boat. I was going to order a 2022 but the instant hike in price and possible delays makes me too nervous.

I am waiting on a 2022 V6 Overland that I ordered, build sheet available already and it shows the full tow package included.
I saw at my dealer two units of 2021 Overland V8 with the Lux, no Advanced Package. All the V8's come with both the Air suspension and full tow package.
If you are not far from North Carolina message me and I can give you my dealer contact.

Unfortunately I’m not near there. But thank you very much for the offer.

Installation here in Texas at Uhaul for a DrawTite with all components, a tail light wiring kit and installation is $625. Most likely going to go this route as we thought ours came with it, but it was actually another vehicle on the lot that we did not get (color choice by the Better Half).
