Adding a Front Facing Camera - Overland

Our Overland didn't come with the Front Facing Camera (the Limited did we looked at and we thought the Overland did by default... wrong). Does anyone think it's possible to add an OEM camera and update the software to accept it?
I was able to add a rear OEM camera on my 1500 a few years back and the computer just needed updating to have it work normally (minus the turning wheel lines). So it should be able to be done.

What options did you take that there is no forward facing camera?

Anything is possible... But you are talking serious money.... In addition to the camera, you'll need a new front trim piece that the camera is embedded in & you'll have to pay the labor to install the wiring for the camera. You're easily talking much more than the option that included it at the factory. Finally, I wouldn't trust the dealer to not screw something up as there likely is no instructions on install.

Yeah, you are probably right. After a month with it, I can't really say I need it. Now my Mustang, that's where I need it! ;)

Same I really need a front-facing camera. I didn't think I would need one when I test drove it but this car is pretty big and I'm not used to it. I have a Limited and it did not come with one.

It would be the integration into the UConnect that would be difficult. When I added a rearview camera in my 1500 RAM, the dealership had to flash the computer afterwards (one dealer wouldn't do it... the dealership that did, got all my business, plus a tradein for a 2500 several years later).

This is an interesting topic….I am getting a 22 Limited with Lux Tech Group II that includes the Surround View Camera System. I thought for sure I saw a front camera in the grille….but, I wonder what kind of access the UConnect system will have. The 360 view is pretty common on cars now, but, a direct view through the front camera is what people want. I have it on our Mercedes, and my 2019 Volvo XC90. While I would love to have the front camera be integrated in to the nav system like Mercedes does, I’ll take simple access if I could get it.

We did test drive a Limited with the 360 view and it was really all we needed camera-wise, but after driving the Overland with some better goodies my wife really wanted it. I actually assume it was in the Overland, but as we were finalizing the paperwork we realized it didn't. But the goodies the Overland had was the deal-breaker.

I have a similar question- i thought mine would come with the fam cam but it doesnt. i got the tech package 2. is there anyway to have it installed?

The front of the L actually doesn’t feel too long to me. I traded up from a tiny hyundai veloster, i always parked by matching headlights next to me and continued to do so with my GCL and it works fine. Im not sure the front is that much longer than the average car, it may be false perception because the car is bigger overall but I could also be wrong.

Also if you reverse youll notice 2 lines on the dash on the front of the car, a few on the corners and 4 behind. These can all turn yellow while parking. At first I wish I had the 360 cam too but to be honest i realized fast its a nice but unnecessary luxury. I also personally enabled the option that lowers your mirrors in reverse and ive gone from never parking in reverse to nailing it. It especially helps stay in the lines and see how close i am to the cars on my sides.

The hardware for the forward facing camera, or "integrated offroad camera", as Jeep calls it, appears not that expensive. I believe the front camera is part number 68375132ab and retails for $170.00. There is also a bracket 68408121ac and retails for $7.35. You'd also have to change out that middle grill insert. After that, it gets a little dicey. The build code for the "integrated offroad camera" is XNY and I don't believe the dealer could add that code because XNY isn't listed under "vehicle option updates". I'd be curious if anyone has the front camera without the surround view. Also, oddly enough, I think the rear camera may be different on vehicles with the forward or surround cameras. I'm not sure if the wiring is all there already, which hopefully we can figure out soon.

Also, it would be good too see the back of a radio with the forward cam, as well as one without, to see if the connection is there to add the camera.

Agreed, but it can be confusing when looking at a few cars. In my case, the camera isn't available because I bought a limited. Also, hindsight is 20/20
Did the same... test drive a few and assumed the higher optioned car would have it (when a lower version did). "Assumed" But after a few months I can say that we're fine without it.
