Activate the Hands-Free Active Driving Assist Feature

I see the hands-free active drive camera that many of us with 2022 (maybe 2021s as well) did not get is now available for purchase. Has anyone attempted to install it and get it activated? I'm considering attempting it, I have heard it's essentially plug and play but I don't know the details on what trim to remove to get to it, and if I call the dealer I'm not sure they will know what to do in order to activate it. Not sure if there is a flash needed and if they know what that flash is or what. Looking for thoughts and input.

It has always been stated that the feature would be available for us, in the future so curious how this works.

I haven’t attempted it and don’t need to. An article I previously read mentioned the either or nature of the capacitive touch steering wheel detecting hands on driving while auto cruise is engaged. The camera obviously does the same job. The article mentioned the camera system/hands free “This system will also work only on approved limited-access highways.” This seems to point to a feature that is highly restricted. With a capacitive touch wheel and hands on, you could use auto cruise everywhere, but the hands free is restricted? Seems very misleading at best.

I would definitely speak to a dealer as the software being flipped from a touch steering wheel to a camera is not going to be straightforward or even possible IMO. Without a TSB/service procedure telling them how, it won’t be completed.

In my 100% jaded opinion, people modding a vehicle still under warranty, that is a brand new platform, that has a lengthy list of lawsuits, buybacks, and my own verbal diarrhea on this forum are flirting with voided warranties. People easily forget about a warranty until their $3500 radio dies, but get warranty voided due to their $100 led bulbs and MIL cancel modules…

Article is here…. It is old info and has probably changed 100 times since, but some insight.

Couple things to touch on here. Hands off and hands on are two different things. You are not switching the capability from one to the other, meaning I'm not loosing the hands on by switching to the hands off feature. I am merely adding the additional hands off feature. It was well documented that through updates later we will all be able to upgrade to the hands free. My bet is the plugs are there, camera simply replaces the top piece of trim on the steering wheel. I'm wondering if the system will simply detect the camera and allow the the hands off feature to be functional.

This isn't a mod. Why do you think adding adding a jeep part, that Jeep said could be added at a later date to our vehicles that were supposed to come with it be considered a mod and void warranties? It's the same thing as adding the mopar trailer brake controller. It's sanctioned and the system recognizes it as soon as the controller is plugged in. Some systems require it to be activated at dealer through flash and other systems (like mine) simply turned on the trailer brake screen on the Uconnect and it functioned as it should.

I do agree with you that it's "limited". It's about 200,000k miles of highway in the US that have been approved for ANY vehicle to have hands off driving (it's not a Jeep thing). That list is growing every month/year. We do a lot of traveling (ie FL to WY or to IN or to NC) and it's all on major interstates, where the majority of the hands off is allowed. To me, it'd be a nice feature to have considering I was supposed to have it. If I can be on the highway and eat my Chick-fil-a without having to use my knee to steer I'd be on board! The cost of adding the $215 camera, and MAYBE needing the flash for another $100 from my dealer is no biggie and worth it to me.

I actually prefer not having the hands-free system. To me, it's easier to have one hand (or even one finger) on the steering wheel than to have the camera and have to focus my eyes forward with hands-free. But that's just what works best for me.

If jeep documented the vaporware so well, why are you here?

Keep calling every dealer in your state or speak with corporate for your answer. I’m a dumb ape that has no Jeep, no headache, but more bananas, me dumb

Agree. I have actually found that my thigh placed a few inches from the steering wheel satisfies the captive touch and the ADA can go as long as I want.
