40 MPG?

I get it that this is not specific to 2022 GCs however I thought I would toss this out here.

So the Biden admin has increased the federal MPG requirement to 40MPG by 2026 which is not far away. It is pretty clear that no ICE car can do this so we will be required to go hybrid like the 4xe or full EV. The data I have is that the factory base price of a GC Trailhawk 4xe is $5k higher than the gas model, if you could even get one. Will gas only Jeeps be dead? These vehicle prices are really high for gas, ev or hybred even worse. MSRP for a Summit 4xe is like $70K.

I am a corporate lease person and I think when I lease the last gas model, I will buy it and drop out of the program.

Thoughts?

I'll never consider a PHEV but I'm all in for a Grand Cherokee EV.
This will be my last ICE.

For the near future, the higher price on Jeep 4xe models is offset by a $7500 federal tax credit (and possibly additional state and/or local benefits). Not to mention lower operating costs.

In theory, some of the reason for higher costs in hybrids is that they are lower volume production, and as they become a larger proportion of a manufacturer’s volume, they’ll see some cost savings. These early sales are also helping cover transitional design, development, and tooling costs which should decrease substantially for future models.

I do believe dinosaur-based fuel for cars has a lot more of a history than it has a future.

That's not completely true. Not placing blame, or defending anyone, just correcting the statement.

Trump reduced the Cafe standards so they'd only be at 40.1mpg by 2026, so that's not a Biden thing. However, the Biden admin DID raise that standard to 49mpg by 2026. This is why Ford launched the Maverick Hybrid, and why we're seeing a ton of 4XE vehicles coming out of Jeep, along with the new straight 6 replacing the V8. We are going to see some BIG changes from ALL auto manufacturers selling in the U.S. over the next few years. There needs to be a huge push on renewables, especially rooftop solar, if this is going to work.
