Sure, man. Nobody likes it, nobody wants it. I guess all the glowing reviews above must just be Stellantis stooges, especially the one who predicts that 4xe will become the best selling Grand Cherokee powertrain, and the one who says “it is literally the best of all worlds for the Grand Cherokee.”

4xe was never meant to be more than a low volume gimmick that'll soon be dead in the water.

“The Jeep Wrangler 4xe outsold all other plug-in hybrids in the United States in the first quarter of 2022.

Jeep sold 8,346 Wrangler plug-in hybrids in Q1 2022, accounting for 18% of Wrangler sales, parent Stellantis said in a press release announcing its sales results.”

Grand Cherokee 4xe brings limited benefits - the powertrain lacks polish - 26 mile electric range.

The powertrain hesitation & its abrupt transitions stand out. Flatten the accelerator & there's a pronounced delay before movement. We were unable to replenish noticeable EV range while in hybrid mode.

The Car & Driver review is uniquely negative. Meanwhile, Motor Trend says “There is a lot happening between the 4xe's transmission, those clutches, the engine, and the motors. It all goes very noticed in the Wrangler and relatively unnoticed in the Grand Cherokee… The powertrain is smoother… Where the Wrangler's accelerator pedal responds recalcitrantly and non-linearly to inputs in Electric mode, the Grand Cherokee's delivers a more natural ramp-up in acceleration. Jumping to 30 mph without pressing the accelerator hard enough to clear the kickdown detent and wake up the gas engine is easy, and although acceleration trails off above surface-street speeds, the transmission helps the motor build speed well enough that Electric mode doesn't feel like a compromised afterthought… You will also want to pay close attention to any nearby fuzz when pressing hard on that accelerator pedal. Jeep claims the Grand Cherokee 4xe can hit 60 mph in 6.0 seconds with the engine and motors working together, making the 4xe quickest in the range. (Again, until the SRT model arrives sometime in the future.) At all speeds, the 4xe feels punchy, and the engine, motors, and transmission respond earnestly to accelerator pedal inputs.”

(In one of the videos above, the reviewer does two separate 0-to-60 tests, beating Jeep’s claim at 5.8 seconds for both.)

And Autoblog says “The beauty is that [Max Regen] mode does an admirable job of converting excess downhill momentum into stored electric power. As I result, I averaged 29.4 mpg over the course of the 42-mile drive up and down the mountains. Despite clocking 26.4 miles on battery and 16.0 miles on gas, I still had 44% of my battery reserve (or 14 miles, the dash estimated) when I parked the 4xe. I started the climb with far less.”
