UConnect/Apple CarPlay issues

Sometimes mine will work via wired, most times not. Sometimes it won't even let me change the volume (even listening to FM radio). You turn the knob or use the steering wheel controls and the numbers on the screen move up and down indicating it's changing the volume, but it just stays at the same volume. And the speakers/door panels rattle on certain frequencies. Sometimes the whole screen just repeatedly reboots and won't let you adjust *anything* via Uconnect. It's totally FUBAR.
Well we can't have FUBAR! It's going to be my wife's DD and if it is really this bad it will be worse for me than if it was my DD. She may end up stealing my JTRD until those bugs are figured out. What's the easiest fix, I heard there was a quick reboot option when the car was running, is that true?

Full discloser, I don't have the car, it's been sitting in a rail yard since yesterday at 3am that is 15min from my dealership. Guess the Holiday shutdown bug spread through the rail yard too. So I'm just prepping for these issues to soften the blow to my wife until some updates are made (could very well have happened between yours and mine).

I posted this to another thread but wanted to share my experience with everyone regarding my Uconnect system that randomly reboots. At this point, I think it's pretty clear that Jeep released a vehicle with a faulty uconnect system. When I'm driving with either an android or apple device connected it will randomly reboot and go to a random screen, sometimes flashing pretty bright or not going back into night mode.

Update.

Dealer's had my car since Monday. They still don't know what's wrong with the UConnect system. However, they told me they have several Grand Cherokee L's with the same problem. Supposedly they have been working on writing another update for the car, but that was Tuesday 1/4 . I spoke to the dealer last night and they have very little confidence that they will be able to fix it. I've been without the car for a total of 3 dealer trips, 11 days, and still have multiple issues that are not resolved. I didn't even list all the problems this time when I took it in because I wanted them to concentrate on fixing the radio. The dealer has said replacing the radio won't resolve the issue...

I find it funny they gave me a Grand Cherokee L Limited as a loaner and, surprise, that one has the same issue. This issue is prevalent with my android phone, my wifes, and another test android.

@JeepCares I called Jeep back last night (BTW - I was hung up on 3 times being transferred) and they had closed my customer support case. Why did they close it? They didn't know, they just did - yet another glaring demonstration of Jeep's incompetence. I asked them to reopen the case (at first they said they couldn't, but then they did) and I've formally requested a buyback on the vehicle. I've made every reasonable attempt to work with Jeep including documenting the issue with pictures, noting reboot times, testing different devices on different carriers, trying wired android, and attempting to eliminate other variables for them. The tech even thanked me for all my work to help them. Despite this, and despite opening both a customer service case AND a STAR case - we still don't have a resolution. Hell, I don't even have someone from Jeep that will call me back and say they care to work with me to resolve the problem. Are they compensating me for my lost time with the vehicle? Please, tell me another joke.

Jeep knows they released a vehicle with a faulty Uconnect system. When this thing reboots constantly it flashes pretty bright at times, which I find distracting. This is now a safety concern for me and we're not even talking about the 4 recalls so far.

Unless Jeep steps up and does a LOT at this point I'm done with Jeep - period - for good.

Reading this forum I know there are quite a few others that have the exact same issue and - if I pick up a car today that isn't fixed I'll be calling a very large legal firm and helping them get started with a class-action lawsuit against Jeep. I'll definitely be pointing them to this forum and others.

My advice If you're having this issue? Start your documentation. Note time in and out of the dealership, number of attempts to repair the vehicle, number of attempts to reach Jeep. Open both a customer service case as well as a STAR case.

Good call on the soft reset procedure; however, this didnt resolve my carplay issues unfortunately. Waiting for ios software update to finish and try again
The same issue happened to me. Car-play option disappeared. I could only link the iPhone to use as a phone or to play music.

I thought the issue started when I walked away from the vehicle while playing iphone content under car-play (uConnect left on while I went into the house out of range of vehicle). Repeated this to see if i could recreate the issue. I could not. Still think that may be part of the issue though. I do remember pressing the carplay icon while in the device screen (the rightmost one of three icons presented on each paired device. Phone Music | Car-play. Not the big one at the bottom of the display) to get carplay to reconnect. That's when the car-play icon spun a bit, then it disappeared on that row and at the bottom of the screen. No more car-play!

Tried a soft reset as you did. No joy. However, the iPhone was still paired with uConnect when I did the reset. That paring only allowed phone and music (not the car-play option) to work with the iPhone. I suspected I also needed to delete the errant existing connection to correct the issue.

So I performed the following steps which successfully restored car-play after this event:

1) Deleted the iPhone profile from uConnect device menu
2) Deleted the uConnect profile from the iPhone bluetooth menu
3) Performed a soft reset on the uConnect system (held in volume and tune buttons on console at the same time for > 5 seconds)
4) Paired the iPhone to the uConnect system per documented process

Car-play option was immediately restored!

Is it wi-fi scanning/hotspot or a lost active bluetooth connection as the culprit? who knows.... For now it's back.

On another note, i also found that the annoying momentary glitch, skip or interruption in streaming audio using the bluetooth connection is absolutely related to the wi-fi scan that uConnect performs. This happens if you set wifi to download service updates. Each time the wifi screen refreshes, the music stream is interrupted momentarily. This happens to the greatest extent when actually in the menu that shows all the wifi connections that uConnect can receive. Each wifi scan drives a very noticeable dropout in the audio stream. If you leave that option active, and leave the screen with the download box checked and the scan active, it also interrupts the bluetooth audio stream, but to a lesser extent. Disabling both the download service updates and the scan appear to resolve the audio streaming issue.

I have read other posts which claim the issue is mitigated by hitting the fast forward button, until it greys out, while streaming Sirius/XM channels. They believe that uConnect stumbles on playing buffered audio vs. live. I did play with that a bit and had some success.
But honestly, with so many variables at play, I am just not sure if this last tidbit true. May not have hung around long enough to be convinced the issue was truly abated by this one.

As others have commented.... lots of bugs for the uConnect team to address. Someone posted that the dealerships will be handing out USB drives with new firmware to deal with these issues. I'm not holding my breath....

Still love my 2022 Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve despite some annoyances. Enjoy your new vehicles all.

New member here searching for a solution to this annoying problem and I found this thread. Looks like I'm not alone. For the most part, my Carplay works correctly. It is the 5-6 times it has randomly decided not to work is my concern. I bought my 2021 GCL Overland 8/21. Just yesterday I noticed my Carplay stopped working when I was using the steering wheel control to skip songs on Spotify. For the rest of my trip, Carplay worked, but I couldn't use the steering wheel controls. I had to use the touchscreen. When I got back into my vehicle to drive again, Carplay screen was blank/black. The icon still showed Carplay though. After this happened, I remember this is exactly what happened last time too (right around Xmas time). I've tried deleting the phone and doing the setup, restarting my phone, etc. I can only get it to connect via bluetooth.....no Carplay. However, the Carplay icon still shows up on the screen. This is baffling and very frustrating. I would love a fix for this!!!

Be sure to check if your iPhone is updated to 15.2.1 as that had CarPlay fixes

I can confirm that 15.2.1 IOS does improve things....but I can also confirm its not perfect. Saturday both direction on my 1 hour trip running Waze lost connection with Apple Car Play about 4 or 5 times. It just goes out and 30 seconds or so come back. So Although its much better it is not perfect. I think Uconnect will need programed next.

Thanks for posting the Apple update. I won't even have a working head unit for my Uconnect until the end of this month, but hopefully I can get it. It's maddening that none of this stuff works (no nav, no XM, no voice calling, no CarPlay, not even FM radio often times.

I upgraded my iPhone to 15.2.1 and it made no difference. 4 hour drive round trip today, and no music of any kind, no nav, etc. Total POS. It's not Apple's fault.

I have an GCL Overland. I was having pretty good luck with my vehicle, but I took it in to the dealer for the recall software update. When I hopped in to take it home I noticed the 10" screen was off. I tried to turn it back on without any luck. After a couple days of debugging they've determined I need to have the screen replaced. As of right now they expect to have a replacement next week.

Anyone else having issues with their screens mysteriously dying?

Someone else recently posted that they were told by the dealer they could not get a new screen until APRIL, four MONTHS from now. Once my dealer finally got a STAR tech to agree to release the part, it is not expected in for at least 2-3 weeks, nearly two months after it broke in the first place (on the second day of ownership).

Do they have to pull the dash if you need a new radio/screen?

My dealer said they have to pull the center dash/console area. Which is why they're waiting until then to address my lack of air to the rear vent center ducts (2nd row) and the crazy heat in my console.

Interesting. I don't know about the 'five minutes' part, but maybe, if the trim assembly is easy to remove.

I have had multiple cars with CarPlay. All of them did some form of this from time to time. It can manifest as no sound, steering wheel buttons not working, inability to make a selection. These have happened wired and unwired.

What works for me:

I press and hold the power button on the radio until the radio shuts off, then turns back on with the Jeep logo. You cannot let go until you see that screen. Mine has started working again after doing this each time.

Good luck!
