UConnect/Apple CarPlay issues

I took my Overland in for the recall and it improved the CarPlay connecting speed and stability.
Also brought back the off road page to the vehicle tab...
Not sure if it’s the new update or just having a dealer installation.
The best part was it had no effect on the two drivers profiles or presets! I wasn’t looking forward to reprogramming all that stuff...
We will see if it sticks...

Mine does the same thing. You can restart the car, your phone and no luck. Restarting your car radio does the trick. Hold down the radio power button which is the volume and hold it for about 15 seconds until it restarts and you’ll see your apple carplay connect. Cross you finger it stays connected for a couple of days but if it does not just restart the radio again.

for 1000 miles we had no problems. Then, last weekend we took a trip to tucson and back, roughly 250 miles round trip. For most of the trip we mucked with the phones and UConnect and could not get carPlay to show up. Then, about 30 minutes from home, the Uconnect shutdown by itself and restarted. After that, we were able to get carplay to show up (of course by that time we didn't need it any more )

If this ever happens again I will try the power button trick!

I have been hesitant to tell the dealer, because I was worried the update might mess up all the programming. Glad to hear it did not, thanks

I had music playing through CarPlay today and when I tapped to go back to the CarPlay “home” screen the music started coming out of the tiny navigation speaker above the drivers seat. First time that’s ever happened. I had to switch sources to Sirius then back to CarPlay to get it to come out of the correct speakers. I do have the latest update too.

Happened to me when I was using Waze through CarPlay. After the navigation voice finished, the music continued from the tiny speaker as well. Had to pause the music and hit play again. Only happened once though and it was before the unconnect update.

Not sure if it’s been said, but, make sure your phones are updated as well, I know apple has recently put out updates that have improvements to CarPlay.

Dealer installed “newer” uconnect update than what was pushed over the air. Now when CarPlay actually does connect, it disconnects and reconnects every 3-5 minutes. That is both wired and wireless. So dealer update made things worse!

I think I found the solution ... at least it worked for two phones.

I, too, went to the dealer and had two uconnnect updates done. Then, with the tech guy, spent two hours in the car and failed to get my phone to connect for CarPlay.

This morning, at home, I continued my hacking and found this:

In order for the Uconnect CarPlay to work you need to connect wifi to "DIRECT-73-AndroidAP"

It has no internet and shows up as low data connection, but that is the key.

The problem I was having, is that I also set up the access point for AT&T in the car, which I called "Bob" and wifi would connect to Bob and break the CarPlay connection.
Then, when I arrive home and the phone connects to my home wifi, the CarPlay connection is dropped again.

So, the magic bullet is to keep the DIRECT-73-AndroidAP connected and CarPlay will work.

This is weird, also for the fact, that anyone with an iPhone is probably not even going to try to connect to an android AP.
Also, painful, because if you want automatic CarPlay connection, you need to set all your other favorite wifi's to not automatically connect.

Anyway .... that worked for our two iPhones .... hope it works for you.

In case anyone is thinking of asking ... Uconnect was updated with the two updates at the dealer yesterday, and our iPhones are iPhone 12 Pro running 15.0.2

Hello everyone,

It's important to know that if you're using an Android device, Google made a configuration that requires USB connection to utilize Android Auto features. Android Auto uses both Bluetooth and USB connections to function, and the system will be unavailable to other devices when using Android Auto. Every time your Android device is connected to media USB, and there is another device plugged in, you will need to manually change USB configuration for Android to send data.

Additionally, when you're connected to WiFi, it is possible that your mobile device will automatically re-pair to a different server, much like @Eki noted. This may explain why some individuals notice that CarPlay disconnects when in a populated area (for example), since there are so many WiFi networks available and your phone attempts to connect to a seperate server without any actions on your end. As a way to mitigate this, we recommend going into your mobile device settings and adjusting your WiFi settings so that it does not automatically connect to public networks or automatically connect to a known network when within a discoverable range (like your home WiFi). These settings are separate from your preferred Uconnect settings.

We hope this helps some of you with the concerns you've been experiencing. However, if anyone is still in need of assistance or has specific questions, don't hesitate to send us a private message!

Thanks,

Courtney

I just want to share my experience for a similar connection problem. I tried to change settings in both my smart phone and GCL.

Eventually. I gave in and did a factory reset (I forgot the exact term such as a default reset, factory reset etc?)

It did reset everything in GLC info/entertainment/bluetooth/pairing system then all functions came back to normal!

Sometimes I observed that wireless connection was on & off every 20-30 seconds. So I turned off the screen for a while then it worked again when the screen was turned on. It's weird but the wireless connection is unstable with my another European vehicle.
Another tip: turn off the automatic download function of the contact database in your smartphone. If you have a large database, it seems to affect the quality of wireless connection as well.

I was talking with a couple of friends about our CarPlay issues in our GCL and they said that the CarPlay on their cars (2021 Suburu Ascent and 2016 Toyota Tacoma) glitches about every other day or when switching between phones to the point that it is unusable at times until they restart the car. The issues they described were pretty identical to what so many on here (including myself) have been experiencing. Maybe it's not a Jeep or GCL specific issues after all.
I don’t know if that’s fully true, I have a ‘21 VW Arteon and I have no issues with wireless CarPlay. I’ve troubleshot this with different iPhone models and different iOS versions, same problem.

Searching the internet I found this forum. Unfortunately the problem affects me too, Jeep Compass Limited 2021. exactly the same symptoms as the thread author. In my case, the carplay icon appears but connects to the phone indefinitely, connection via cable works. Currently, the car has been at the dealer for the second month since purchase and they still do not know what is causing it. But looking at what is happening it is a global problem.

Bottom line is Jeep is terrible. I have had nothing but issues with my new Grand Cherokee. The dealer actually told me "you shouldn't buy a new model, they always have issues the first year".

You can add me to the list of GCL Overlands that are having issues. Just picked it up on November 18th and a week later Carplay issues. I would have hoped they had done the Y67:2021 software update on it and any other updates that needed before we got it. So if that is the case we are having issues like everyone else. I will try the hard reset and see.

I have had my GCL for 5 days. This morning car play stopped working. So frustrating!! I have tried un pairing my phone several times, resetting my phone, plugging in with usb cord and nothing is working. I am very disappointed especially now after seeing this is a common problem.

It really has nothing to do with your phone. Hold down the volume and tuning knobs on your radio for about 10 seconds until it resets itself. CarPlay will start working again.
