Towing connection problems

We bought an L with trailer prep, and than purchased the hitch and harness we had the dealer install it all when we hooked it up to our horse trailer it told us to check connection and light out. We also got the yellow trailer warning symbol. The running lights will not work. But that horse trailer works with our other truck, and our L works fine with 4 other horse trailers at our barn. Our trailer has old lights and the rest have LED. So, we had Jeep look at it again and they said they fixed it, but they didn't. We also tried to hook it up tonight to a small older hybrid travel trailer and received the same problems. Any suggestions?

I have the exact same issue. I have a 2021 Grand Cherokee L - regardless of the trailer or connection (7 or 4 pin) the Check Trailer Warning light comes on, mostly when I decelerate for a light or traffic. I can’t find any solutions. Dealer has no idea

Dealer has no idea? Common theme. If the warning light comes on slowing down, it indicates a possible defective ground as the trailer is trying to ground through the hitch ball. Check for all wires intact and operating on another vehicle. Then pull the 4/7 pin harness out and add another ground wire to the harness and ground it to the frame or solid metal under there.

Mine has the exact same issue when I pulled a Uhaul trailer this summer. Always when I was hitting the break and slowing down. I just ignored it. what does it actually do? anything? The light that is.

Thanks for your reply.. unfortunately I have been to the dealer - twice, two different dealers. They can’t replicate the issue as they aren’t pulling a trailer over a distance. What do you suggest I tell them to check?

They have no idea - 2 dealers. Having used several trailers it has to be on the TV side. Will check the ground … great advice!

Hi… I am not very mechanical so I have an odd question. Until I find a long term solution, would adding a ground wire from the trailer frame to the TV harness (using alligator clip on the frame maybe) work?

Sorry for the late reply. I think it would be worth a shot, but something stronger than an alligator clip. Shoot a self-drilling sheet metal screw into some metal underneath where the harness is.

Same issue here with my trailer. I have a factory tow package. I stopped into a dealer service center a few days ago and the service manager had no idea what the issue may be. I asked if by chance there may be any sort of a software update, but he was not aware of that either. It really is a very irritating warning on my cluster, telling you that you have a light out on the trailer. Everything shrinks down, there is an audible "ding"... it is disarming every time. But it happens upon braking, as others have indicated above.

Hey guys, I wanted to give my 2cents on a possible issue and fix. I had this same issue come up while towing with my old range rover and what I found to be the problem was the LED lights on my newer trailer did not produce enough voltage resistance causing the same "check trailer light". I wound up adding a resistor in line on the trailer side of the harness to bump up the resistance, which seemed to solve the problem. I am not sure if this fix would work on the GCL's but I am now curious if I will have this issue once I hook up a trailer

Hey BH - Is there a particular resister you used that increased the resistance? I get the issue on a boat trailer, utility trailer AND on a simple 4 plug test light.

I have that same issue with my 21 Summit Reserve L, Dealer unable to find anything wrong. It has been in the shop for 2 weeks now for steering issues detailed in this other thread.
