Radar detector hardwire (invisacord)

Hi all,

If you're like me, you like clean installs. I run a valentine1 radar and hate wires running down the dash board or hanging from the windshield.

Our new L's are really easy to tap in with an invisacord to have a clean no wire "key" powered set up.

Pictures below. Red goes to red, black goes to black. This turns on the radar when you press your ignition. The cover plates pop out with a little bit of downward pull. They are plastic tabs so no need to pry or yank.

so, with all the collision avoidance, and lane assist and cruise control distance and the other radar signal sources in this car and half the cars on the roads these days ... how on earth can your radar detector really work without going off every 5 seconds?

The software is updated on my valentine, they have figured out how to decifer the differences between a cars lane sensor and a PO running K band. There is also several different types of detection by the police, X band, K Band, KA Band, and Laser. The tech has come just as far for Radar detectors as cars with "safety" fetures.

Thanks a bunch for this, the first thing I do in my new vehicles is install my Escort Passport Max 360.

If you're unhappy with using suction cups try out a BlendMount for the mirror. They're incredible. They're expensive but they have amazing build quality.

Yea have thought about those for years. I have 2 C5's ( vette) in the garage and the suction allow me to easily keep a mount in each car, 3 suction mounts $10 a piece. I also like to have the mount tucked up higher then under the rear view. But Blendmounts are definietly stout and worth the $$

the valentine and escort are about the same price ... we are going on a road trip soon ... are they really that good at false detections so that they are usable?

Occainsionally I get hit with laser beep if a Volvo or Mazda that has the laser cruise control is coming directly at me, usually on a 2 lane road. The software made huge strides. I will be sending my Gen 1 off soon to get the gen 2 unit. Should be even better. I do know you have to send the GEN 1 Valentines to get updated (Gen 2 has ability to update without going back to the manufacture), each update has had an improvment. Below is the prgression I've experianced

Unit purchased in 2010, use to get alerts when driving by automatic doors and gates, sent in for an update maybe a year or 2 later. No longer experianced door alerts
2016 I sent in for another update when all I had was alerts for blind spots, update remedied probably 90% of it
Fast forward today with crash avoidance systems etc with laser sensors, (Volvo and Mazda is what I noticed) I'm getting alerts again.

Gen 2 should be much further upgrade and update then I have. I know I have missed a few in the past years so I have too old of a unit to get the updates. So I have to buy the upgrade to Gen 2.

Here is the honest opinion on Radar detector....... They don't stop you from getting a ticket. It gives you the alert to determine if you are approaching a speed trap, or if there is an officer running radar in your proximity. You will NOT be able to get warned in enought time on Laser, But you will know the second the officer pings you with it. Lasers are instant for an officer, so you unless you have a jammer, when you get lasered.... You're done. Most of the time you can see an officer in enough time when they are shooting laser as most states have specific laws and procedures (you should learn them to protect yourself; or higher good lawyers)for a Laser ticket to be held up in court. Visable, triggered outside of their car, not moving, and most importantly, officially calibrated each day before shift on a certifed maker, and by a certified distance from that said marker.

Knock on wood I have not had a citation in several years. The 2 citations I have had to date were from unmarked units pacing me when I was driving my corvette. There is a common denominator that I will let you determine the validaty of those stops for your self. 78 in a 70 in a vette gets a ticket, but the minivan that blew past me didn't... story for another day.

I do a decent amount of long distance driving and I know the road I travel enough. However speedlimits do drop and that often is overlooked by drivers not familar with that area. My radar is simply a tool to help me avoid those limit drop speed traps, or that pescky highway patrol officer hiding behind a tree on the side. I don't use the radar to allow me to run 100+ mph, there is a time and place, and public roads are not for that. But running 8 or 9 over to shave time andget where I'm going is reasonable and worth the investment for added layer of protection.

I bought the Escort Passport Max 360 last year and it is much better at filtering out false alerts than my previous Escorts. There are still a few vehicles like the occasional Cadillac or Mazda that will set it off, but it's not bad. When using my fuzzbuster in combination with running Waze on road trips, cops don't take me by surprise very often.

Good question. Fortunately, todays radar detectors are vastly different from ones of the 80's/90's,etc.
My new Uniden R7 has 66+ options (in expert mode) for enabling/disabling frequencies and functions.

I could not have done this installation without your excellent post. Thank you!
I will add that to unplug the wired mirror connector, the release tab for the connector is on the underside of the connector and recessed a bit. It took me a while to find but once I did, it detached easily.
I used the brand "MirrorTap" wire kit for my Uniden installation and it was very easy.

I have hardwired all my Vettes like this over the years, I’ll be doing this to my Summit Reserve tomorro, using a Blendmount under the mirror.

I have had dealers tell me if you have a problem after you do this (hardwire) good luck with warranty claims fyi. It's not worth the risk to me.

The Magnuson Moss warranty act protects consumers from ridiculous statements like that that come from dealers. Hardwiring a radar detector can't screw anything up or void any warranty issues.

Yea I know all about the Magnuson Act:) but when you have this much technology that these cars have in them, and you start splicing wires etc... it's not worth the headaches. I had a 2016 GMC truck and 2017 Chevy Suburban that I let a high end stereo shop install a V1 and a camera in. Everytime I ran it thru a carwash the check engine light would turn on and the vehicle would not run on all cylinders etc... After months of trouble shooting they(Dealer) pulled the added stuff out and both trucks went back to normal with never an issue again. The dealer will not even add aftermarket electronics because of probelms that can occur etc...
I just mount my detectors high and tight so others can't see it. Plus I have tinted windows etc...

The 80's we only had to worry about X and K band. Times have changed!
