Key FOB locked inside! How does this happen?

Yesterday I was running an errand and I turned off and got out of my 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit reserve. Key FOB was inside (I usually keep it in the driver door handle space). As soon as I shut the driver door, it honked 3 times and locked all the doors! I was surprised, but thought "no problem, key is inside so I can just pull the handle and open it". Nope, nothing. Tried the back doors, nothing. Tried the front passenger door, nothing. I could see the FOB sitting in there, looking through the window, but could not get the doors to unlock. Luckily I had my cell phone with me and was considering calling someone, but then decided to check the back gate, and it opened! It didn't unlock any doors, but it opened!

So I climbed in, reached over the back seat and unlocked one of the back doors. Then I got in the back door, and reached over and unlocked the driver door and got my key FOB. Everything seems to work perfectly with the key, locking, unlocking etc. I have left the key inside hundreds of times without this ever happening before. Anyone else run into this random (and scary) bug?

Was my dog inside? My little dog accidentally stepped on the lock button and locked me out. Now, when I take the dog on errands, I make sure I don’t leave the keys inside.

That great... or sucks... guess depends on where you are at. I guess this is why it might be nice to have the Jeep connected service? I had it for a couple of years on my JL, but let it lapse.. don't think it's really worth it the few times I've locked/unlocked from my phone.

glad you got inside!!!! I would have a panic attack lol, also remember to use your jeep app. you can lock/unlock your doors using that.

How does that happen really? All the Jeeps I have had in the last 5 years with keyless entry would refuse to lock the doors with the fob inside. I often forget the fob inside in the cup holder and when I lock and shut the door, the horn beeps once and the door unlocks.

There have been problems with the FOBs losing connection (I've been driving mine numerous times and the message pops up on the dash 'FOB not detected' despite it being right in the center cupholder where they made a spot to keep it). I'd definitely bring it up to your dealer and see if there's any TSB's they can perform. Half of this stuff Jeep doesn't know how to fix yet, it seems, but they're figuring their own car out a day at a time, so you never know.
