Jeep Grand Cherokee L > Battery Discharge Issue

Thanks everyone for the post.... I got a call from my wife last night that she was stranded at work (she was working late and no one there to jump the dead battery). She tried calling FCA roadside and was told it would be 2 hours before someone got there.
We have only had the vehicle for 3 weeks and a dead battery. Hopefully it is the latch.
To make matters worse; we called the local dealer and they have no appointments until Dec 3rd- BUT if we want to leave it there, someone might be able to get to it.
I love my RUBI; but was hesitant to drop this money on a GCL Summit....

Our new GCL didn't even make it to 500 miles before the batteries drained. The dealer disconnected both sets of wires so now we can't even open the hatch manually. Did anyone else have the dealer do this? Does anyone know how long it takes to get the new latch? We were told that there were already 230 on backorder. Thanks.

We got out part yesterday to fix the back latch battery draining issue. Dealer Ordered it 11/8 and it arrived 11/17

See here... UPDATED WITH CORRECT PART NUMBER FROM OWNER. DIY repairs can result in warranty becoming void issues, not trying to be a Debbie Downer. The photos of lift gate module location and recall bulletin are from a 2014-2015 JEEP Cherokee, see recall bulletin. Go figure, Jeep had module failures back then. The module is located under the plastic piece that guy is prying up with his screwdriver. The plastic trim that covers the latch area in the middle. The module is located on the inside of the tire well area underneath the plastic cover. Mental note, use plastic tools to pry on plastic parts, the photos are not ideal and will result in damage if not careful. I Assume the location is the same, keyword... Assume. Just trying to help, not point you all incorrectly. My GCL is at the shop and cannot help any more, go figure.

Why are you showing an RRT for 2015?

Trying to show location. Photos are from the RRT also. People who don't have accounts cannot open attachments, hence adding separate photos. There are more people on this forum without accounts than with currently. I made the statement that "I Assume the location is the same". Since you've quoted my post I cannot edit it now. Either read my caveat in my post about trying to help and not mislead people, or unquote my original post so I can delete the data. No publicly available photos exist for GCL lift gate module locations, let alone parts. I am not jeep, or a mod, I am just a cranked off GCL owner trying to help others.

When i bought my Jeep the battery was dead when they tried to pull it off showroom floor. Sales guy figured someone left something on and it had been on the floor for awhile he mentioned.

I got a call back then next day and he told me the battery was charging but its really low…he said he would replace it with a new one before i pick it up. Its been close to a month and i’ve had no issues. Mine is a Limited and a September build date.

Just received a Customer Satisfaction notice on my Jeep app relating to a possible battery drain problem do to the amplifier. It's a software update that my dealer is doing for me after lunch.

having a similar situation. Battery was too low to start the car on lot when I looked at it. Sales guy ran in and came back out and said sorry can’t sell this to you, something is draining the battery and there’s a part on back order. Manager came over and said if you want it we can pull the part from a different car. (The part was the lift gate latch). I made it 2 1/2 weeks and not quite 500 miles before it needed a jump. I jumped it, fully charged the battery back at home and a couple days later it happened again.
Have an appointment with the service dept at a different dealer tomorrow.

Can someone please translate this from my service manager: appears that while we were diagnosing and inspecting your Jeep, the battery threshold went below that number. On some vehicles, when this happens a message saying battery charging will appear. On your Jeep it simply says start/stop not available and no other details. Going further with the auxiliary battery, it runs the control modules and accessories when the start/stop functions. The more options running, the bigger the draw on that battery. Talking with my higher skilled technicians, I am told that with this design, the auxiliary battery will from time to time, not have enough voltage to allow the start/stop to function. It will need to recharge itself until the battery sensor sees enough voltage to allow start/stop operation.

So the battery is only fitting 65% threshold?
I got the same from my service manager when we took our GCL for the stop start not working. It hasn't worked from day one. We even went on a long road trip and it still didn't work. We have not had the dead battery issue like others are having. When we shut the car off we get a check rear seat message.

Update for anyone who might encounter this lift gate latch/battery drain issue:
We called the dealer yesterday for an update and they found the latch to be the issue (even though it was replaced with a “good” one when I bought the car). The service manager called this morning to tell me the part was delayed for a couple days and I asked him if it was a new part number. He said the latch is in fact a superseded part number and what likely happened was the dealer swapped a defective part for a defective part. He said the old defective latches don’t report the lift gate as being closed and so the car keeps applying power to something (I’m not sure what, as I never heard the sound of any motors trying to continuously run) thus draining the battery.

On a side note, I would get the “check rear seat” message on most, if not all shut downs. I figured it was some random safety thing that the government requires now to make sure I don’t leave a baby back there. After looking deeper in the owner’s manual it addresses that system but not in really great detail. It mentions the logic involving the rear doors opening and I’m wondering if that includes the lift gate. In essence the lift gate reports itself open for every key cycle. Just a thought for those who get that message a lot.

Can't make this stuff up... Service calls and says they didn't get to diagnose the problem until mid afternoon and won't have time to finish because tech's leave at 4:30. Dropped the car off last night as the appointment was for 8 am. They said if I want the car back tonight, I'll have to make another appointment so they can "dig into" the issue. Then service advisor tells me they did find a bulletin about the rear latch, but they aren't sure what needs to be done....
