Jeep Grand Cherokee L > Battery Discharge Issue

Dealership has the vehicle and according the service writer the tech is working with Star to troubleshoot the problem before Star will release a new radio unit. That was on Friday mid day.

I'm hoping to hear from the dealership this morning with an update that the part is ordered but I know how this works. Hope is just delayed disappointment...

My other problem I am having is Enterprise Rent a car is a pain in the ass. They met me at the dealership with a Chrysler 300. Nice car but I can't fit everyone in it. It's to small and with the weather that's coming this week the car is going to be useless as its rear wheel drive. I have asked for an SUV since that is what I am supposed to be driving but they just blow me off and never call me back after saying they will work on finding me an SUV.
Update:
Our GCL has returned to our driveway.
13 day turn around was better than I anticipated with the replacement of the radio/telematics unit. Radio now works as it should and even the wireless CarPlay is now working along with the steering wheel controls for the radio unit.

This last trip to the dealer for warranty work was #4. Fingers crossed that this was the last trip but who am I trying to kid... I still have no trust in the vehicle. In reality I would love to get rid of this thing and into something different that doesn't have the problems that we are having.

Until next time

Is the what they're calling the radio/telematics unit a single module in the center console? That, and the liftgate latch battery drain, seems to be the source of most of the problems reported so far. Hopefully this will confirm that the design is viable when the components meet their spec.

Yes, the center touch screen unit was replaced with a new one. My question is what is the difference between the radio/telematics unit that I is in the vehicle now compared to the old one that is going to prevent this from happening again? We bought the GCL in August '21 and it took 4 months to really show up and be a problem. So do I get to do this all over again in May/June? These questions being rhetorical obviously.

So with that and the lift gate module being replaced I am really hoping that this is the end of the major problems with this vehicle. But you know what hope is, just delayed disappointment...

I reckon time will tell.

I'm guessing/hoping that the new raft of micro electronics that this model relies on is very sensitive to a clean and stable power supply, and things like the bad latch and maybe other faulty components might be disrupting that.

Happened to me, I think? Just had the car towed off.

Interestingly, I was not able to jump start the car myself and was prepared to use the orange "emergency neutral" plug. The tow truck company hooked up two starters to the car, one under the hood and one to the battery under the driver's seat, and were able to keep it running long enough to get it onto the truck. The guy who came out had just seen this happen to another one GCL yesterday.

This thread was very helpful in not getting too despondent about prospects for diagnosing.

Just registered after searching the web for others having electrical issues with their 2021 GCL. I am having the same dead battery issue. First time occurred December in the service write up lane of the Jeep dealer. GCL worked fine when I drove in then was totally dead when they tried to move it to the work shop for a recall, popping noise in the radio on start up and a front end high pitched noise at 47/62 mph. A couple of days latter the service dept. called and advised it was ready to pick up. They could find no error codes indicating why it would not start nor could they replicate the problem. Basically I was told there was nothing they could do and to bring it back if it happened again. Well it did...on the morning of February 23rd, 2022, I tried to start the GCL and it was totally dead again. Nothing electrical was working and the engine wouldn't turn over. I called the service department and was told they could not get the GCL in until March 10th. I called Chrysler road service to have the vehicle towed in so it would be there if there was an earlier appointment available. The tow driver tried to jump the GCL but again, it wouldn't even turn over. February 25th I received a text from the service dept indicating the technician was trying to determine the problem and they would get back with me. When they do I will mention the lift gate issue. I also kept getting the "check rear seat" indicator on shut down, but also thought it was a child safety item. Oh, the radio still pops on start up and the front end noise is still there even though they claimed they fixed it by resealing the passenger mirror. Just something else they have to work on. Wish I had my 2018 Durango GT back.

You might’ve have seen it, but some on this forum have been told they had an issue with an amp for the stereo causing drain issues too.
Never good hearing about problems going on for months….

got my GCL back yesterday. Tech check of the battery showed 4.2V. Battery would not take a charge so tech indicated it was a bad battery. I expressed my concern about why would the battery discharge like it did and what was bad about the battery, but no-one could give me an answer. I will drive it and monitor the battery voltage. I have still have my March 10th appointment and will use it to hopefully get the radio static pop and front end noise fixed. Mary, thanks for the info about the radio amp and Kate, thank you for your response.

Yes, I have had to have my l towed twice after only 5 weeks of ownership.

I am new to this forum and not sure how to post a new report ?? ---- My username is tidecurrents
I have a 2021 jeep cherokee limited and this battery discharge issue has happened to me as well! 3 times !! The first occurence happened after about 7 months after purchase. the 2nd occurence 2 months later and now the 3rd occurence also 2 months after that. Each time the car has been completely dead and would not even allow a jump or a recharge. The batteries were ruined. The car has been towed to the dealership 3 times so far!-- This will be the 4th battery replaced since purchase in April of 2021. Dealership has been accomidating but no solution as yet. They did not seem to be aware of these other ongoing reported issues and I will make them aware to hopefully find a solution.

I purchased my GCL Summit in January (Nov/2021 build) and have 2,000 on it. Went to pick it up after having it ceramic coated yesterday. When my husband went to start and it just clicked. Tried again and it just clicked. Next thing the alarm starts going off, the horn is beeping, lights flashing, everything under the sun flashing on the dash, on/off. It was possessed. Finally pulled the battery terminal to stop the noise and everything was dead after. After this, we couldn't unlock the back doors, move the seat, absolutely nothing. Applied a booster pack and it took 20 minutes before we could start it and completely drained the booster. I now have the engine light on and auto stop/start won't work (my husband is happy). All last week my car kept telling me to buckle my seat belt that was already buckled. My proximity lights are no longer working. I had a feeling that bad things were going to start happening but tried to remain positive. I've also had my sensors not work at all and other times almost give me whiplash when nothing was present. My Uconnect app hasn't worked since 6 weeks after I purchased it and as of today it does (probably because of yesterday's fiasco). Called the dealer and can't get my vehicle in until next Wednesday. They stated they haven't had any issues with the L thus far. Trying to stay optimistic that it will continue to start until then and the dealer remedies the issues.

They had it 3 days and replaced the auxiliary battery (battery B) under the driver's seat. The auto stop/start isn't working, but they said it takes time for the battery to go through its learn cycle. The dealer has been great so far. Fingers crossed it is back to normal shortly.

Isn't the stop/start battery under the passengers seat?
